Day 22
4/23/04
Laramie, WY to Medicine Bow, WY
60 miles

Weather was pretty good today, and I made great time to Medicine Bow.  The Virginian Hotel in Medicine Bow is a really neat hotel, built in 1911 in honor of Owen Wister's famous novel "The Virginian".  As you can see above, it is really neat inside.

Just south of Rock River I saw a pronghorn antelope, which is actually a type of goat.  They look sort of like a stocky version of a typical goat with a shaggy, light brown coat, a bright white underside and tail, and small deer antlers.  Anyway, it was running alongside the highway, sort of trapped because of the barbed wire fence from the adjacent ranch, and it kept about 100 yards ahead of me for quite a while.  Then, it doubled back and ran right past me at a distance of about 10 feet.  Unfortunately I couldn't get the camera out in time, but it was really cool.  Then, a few miles down the road, another one did the same thing.  Hopefully sometime on this trip I'll successfully get a picture of one.
