Main Street - Lander

Day 26 - 4/27/04
Round trip from Lander, WY to Sinks Canyon State Park
21 miles

Last night had a relaxing evening drinking a few beers with the crew here at the Maverick Hotel.  Some interesting characters and a friendly, tight-knit bunch.  Found that this is the home town of one of my former interns (Joe Dufek); Lander gets a thumbs up from me.

Took a day trip out to Sinks Canyon State Park.  Pretty much a straight climb of 1400 ft. over about 8 miles to get to it.  A very interesting geologic formation.  The Popo Agie River disappears into a limestone cave (the Sink) and emerges in a pool (the Rise) about a quarter-mile away.  Very scenic canyon with a nice forest on the north-facing slope (the moisture from the snow stays around much longer on the north side).

Found out that indeed the road that goes from Teton National Park to Yellowstone (the South Entrance) is not open until at least May 7, and none of the campgrounds are open, but the road going through Teton Park to Jackson is fine for travel.  So, the current plan is to ride to Jackson and rent a car and go around to West Yellowstone and enter Yellowstone from the West.

Hope to camp out tomorrow at Bull Lake, so won't be able to update the page for a couple of days.
